On August 1, 2010, when asked about the melee weapons shown in the video, Jack Scalici, 2K Director of Creative Production, replied: Enemies are seen using blocking, hold-breaking, pushing and evasive moves. Vito uses melee weapons, headbutts, and a variety of kicking, kneeing and holding moves. Later in 2009, a Mafia II development video from GDS 2009 (November 6-7) surfaced on YouTube, showing a truly incredible melee combat system that's nothing like the final melee combat system in the game. It's like, of course, car driving, there's shooting, there's melee weapons, and all these sort of things. the gameplay stuff that you saw in the trailer is really, really sort of a good example of some of the, I don't know, the classic gameplay that you can expect from this sort of mafia title. In Episode 3 of 2K's Mafia II Podcasts, posted May 4, 2009, 2K Producer Denby Grace responded to a question about whether the action montage in the Holiday trailer was indicative of gameplay:

However, in the files of the final version of the game, Giuseppe was selling Cleaver and Cosh was buyable in Gun shops.Ģk answer: They will not be in the final game. You can see a cosh in Giuseppe's Shop in the picture.

Here is one of their videos of progress: On Melee Weapons works a team from MafiaScene. It's car driving, shooting, melee weapons, and all these things, and we're going to go into all these things in a lot more depth in future podcasts and future articles, so I don't want to give away too much, but in answer to your question, Elizabeth: Yes, this is the kind of gameplay that we will be expecting to play in Mafia II. So, the gameplay stuff that you saw in the trailer is a good example of the kind of classic gameplay that you can expect from this Mafia title. The modification was posted publicly to NexusMods for download.
Mafia 2 demo mods mod#
However on 1/13/20 Mafia community modder, Modded Games released a YouTube video showcasing his Melee Weapons mod that adds 19 new melee weapons to the game with perfect working animations. Video showcasing 19 melee weapons with perfect working animations. If you stop this video exactly at 2:19 you will see that Vito was able to buy a bludgeon (the melee weapon can be seen on the original HUD as well) Even the shooting scenes start to feel as nerve-wrenching as buttering your toast with a spoon. The video depicts Vito carrying a baseball bat from 1:32 onwards.Įvidence of these weapons in the original version of the game. Nevertheless, it does start to feel a little routine after a while. This may be some sort of commentary on the fact that working for the Mafia is similar to working for most other companies in that you have to wake up in the morning and go to work to be led by the nose by some halfwit with a tie on. Some have suggested that this game is an interactive drama, which is why you are led from one mission to the next, with many of them starting in the morning right after you wake up. The gameplay within the Mafia 2 game is more story driven, so you tend to be pulled from one mission to another without much choice in the matter. Is this because they are planning a third? Or, were they going for a Sopranos “Cut to black” ending?Ĭomparing It To That Game You Have PlayedĬomparisons to GTA 4 are inevitable, but you will find they are very different games, and one of the reasons is because you are given more freedom with GTA 4. By the time you get to the point where you discover that crime doesn’t pay, the game almost skips out on you and leaves a lot of stuff unresolved. In typical fashion, the mafia is demonized and your character decides he must get out. You are lured into a life of crime and love it until you suddenly decide you don’t. The game’s storyline is as predictable as ever, just as it was with the first Mafia game. It is in effect a very different gameplay experience from the one you get with GTA.

That is not to say that Mafia 1 or 2 players didn’t go on killing rampages as you do with GTA, but with the Mafia games, you don’t feel the need or even the compulsion. Many people though that the first Mafia game was just a rip off of the 3D Grand Theft Auto games, but what actually happened was that people saw they could do more than just cause mayhem when given the freedom to roam. The GTA alternative that really moves in another direction.
